Cantonese TonesBasic Description of Cantonese ConsonantsCantonese has 20 consonant sounds: p, b, t, d, ts, dz, k, g, kw, gw, f, h, l, m, n, ng, s, y and w. The first 10 come in pairs. (Unlike English, ts and dz occur at the beginning of words in Cantonese.) The consonants in the first column (p, t, ts, k and kw) are pronounced with a heavy puff of air, called aspiration.Basic Description of Cantonese FinalsCantonese has the final "aa" but doesn't have the final "a". Therefore in the Yale system, final "aa" will be written as "a". But the sound is still "aa". For example, if you see "fa", the pronunciation should be actually "faa".Basic Description of Cantonese TonesCantonese uses tone contours to distinguish words, with the number of possible tones depending on the type of final.They are basic elements for absolute beginners.
