Learn web mapping from scratch with JavaScript, GeoJSON and live APIs. Build real projects and deploy them free.
What you'll learn
⚡ Build interactive web maps from scratch using Leaflet.js, HTML, CSS and JavaScript
⚡ Work confidently with coordinates, zoom levels and tile layers from free map providers
⚡ Add markers, popups, tooltips and custom icons, and make maps respond to user clicks
⚡ Understand GeoJSON properly - what it is, where to find free data, and how to load it
⚡ Style and colour geographic data by its properties to build thematic, data-driven maps
⚡ Handle large datasets with marker clustering and visualise density with heatmaps
⚡ Connect your maps to free public APIs and keep them updating with live data
⚡ Deploy your finished maps to the web for free with GitHub Pages and share them by URL
Requirements
❗ Basic working knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript - you should be comfortable with variables, functions and objects A computer with a free code editor (we use Visual Studio Code) and a modern web browser
❗ No GIS or geography background required - we cover latitude, longitude, coordinate systems and GeoJSON together
❗ No paid software, subscriptions or API keys needed at any point
Description
Modern web maps are everywhere - delivery tracking, store locators, property websites, weather dashboards, emergency response systems. Most of them are built with Leaflet.js, a free and open-source library that has quietly become the standard for putting maps on the web.
This course teaches you to build them. Not by reading a list of functions, but by writing real code, testing it in the browser, breaking it, and fixing it - the way you actually learn to build software.
You'll start with an empty folder and a blank HTML file. Within the first hour you'll have a working, interactive map running in your own browser. From there we add markers and popups, design custom icons, and make the map respond when users click it. Then we move into real geographic data: what GeoJSON is, where to find free datasets, how to load it, and how to style it by its properties so that your map tells a story instead of just showing dots.
Later sections take you into the techniques that separate a demo from a real application. You'll handle thousands of data points with marker clustering, visualize density with heatmaps, pull live information from free public APIs, and keep a map refreshing itself while the user watches. We'll make your maps work properly on phones, make them fast, and finally deploy them to the web with
GitHub Pages so you can send anyone a link.
Everything we use is free. Visual Studio Code, a browser, and Leaflet - no paid
tools, no licenses, and no API keys you have to pay for.
WHY THIS COURSE EXISTS
AI assistants can generate mapping code, and often it works. So why learn this?
Because generated code is a starting point, not a finished product. It doesn't know your users, your data, or the trade-offs you're making. The moment you need to customize it, debug it, or make it fast, you have to understand what it wrote.
If you understand Leaflet, AI becomes a powerful assistant instead of something you depend on.
That's also why we keep returning to the official Leaflet documentation together - not to memorize it, but so that when you need a feature this course never covered, you can find it and implement it yourself.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
Every lecture comes with starter code so you begin where I begin, and the finished code so you can compare when something breaks. There are hands-on practice exercises throughout, and a capstone project you choose and build
step by step, from setup to a live URL.
I read the Q&A. If you get stuck, ask.
Who this course is for
⭐ Developers who know some JavaScript and want to add mapping to their skill set
⭐ Anyone who works with location data and wants to publish it on the web rather than in a desktop tool
⭐ Students and career changers who want a portfolio project that looks and behaves like real software
⭐ GIS and data people comfortable with basic JavaScript who want their maps online and shareable
⭐ Not a fit if you have never written JavaScript before - learn the fundamentals first, then come back
