Using a fully functional COBOL application - the Bowling League Management System - as a running case study, you'll work through six proven modernization strategies: encapsulate, refactor, rearchitect, rebuild, replace, and retire. Each strategy is explained in plain language, then applied directly to real batch, CICS, and DB2 components, so you see exactly when each approach makes sense and what it looks like in practice.
You'll learn how to wrap legacy logic as callable services, decouple tightly-bound programs, evaluate rebuild-versus-replace tradeoffs, and build a defensible modernization roadmap - skills you can bring straight into a real assessment or planning conversation. A hands-on capstone project ties it all together, giving you a portfolio-ready modernization plan of your own.
