This course provides a focused introduction to the pharmacological management of three important clinical areas:heart failure, diabetes mellitus, and thyroid disorders. The course is designed to help students understand not only the names of commonly used drugs, but alsohow these drugs work, why they are used, and what important effects and adverse effects they can produce.
In the heart-failure section, you will explore pharmacological strategies for managingexcessive preload, excessive afterload, and inadequate cardiac contractility. The course covers ACE inhibitors, diuretics, organic nitrates, vaso-selective calcium-channel blockers, central sympathetic depressants, noradrenaline-release blockers, beta-adrenergic agonists, digoxin, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, and selected beta-blockers used in heart failure.
The diabetes section focuses oninsulin and oral antidiabetic agents. You will learn the mechanism of insulin, its anabolic metabolic effects, clinical uses, adverse effects, and the characteristics of different insulin preparations. You will also study insulin secretagogues such assulphonylureas and meglitinides, insulin sensitizers such asmetformin and thiazolidinediones, and the gastrointestinal glucose-absorption inhibitoracarbose.
The thyroid pharmacology section covers bothhypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. You will learn about thyroid hormone replacement withthyroxine/levothyroxine (T4) andtri-iodo-thyronine/liothyronine (T3), as well as anti-thyroid approaches involvingcarbimazole, propylthiouracil, radioactive iodine, and drugs that inhibit peripheral T4-to-T3 conversion.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on connectingmechanism of action with physiological and therapeutic effects. Diagrams, pathways, drug classifications, and pharmacokinetic information are used to make complex pharmacological concepts easier to understand.
