This course,Reliability Assessment and Optimization of Electric Power Systems, provides a structured introduction to the analytical, probabilistic, simulation, and optimization techniques used to assess and improve power-system reliability.
Throughout the course, you will develop an understanding ofgeneration adequacy, transmission adequacy, composite-system reliability, probability and statistics, reliability indices, Monte Carlo simulation, contingency analysis, load curtailment, and reliability economics.
A major focus of the course is the application ofoptimization techniques to reliability assessment. You will explore Linear Programming, the Primal and Dual Simplex approaches, LP relaxation techniques, and Optimal Power Flow concepts. These methods help engineers manage large numbers of system constraints and determine appropriate operating solutions for different system conditions.
The course also introducesnetwork-flow techniques for analysing transmission transfer capability. You will learn the fundamental concepts of maximum flow, augmented paths, cut sets, the Ford-Fulkerson method, and labeling algorithms. These techniques provide an effective way to identify physical transmission bottlenecks and understand multi-area transfer limitations.
You will also learn how probabilistic methods and simulation can be combined with power-system analysis and optimization. This provides a foundation for evaluating large numbers of possible system states and understanding how generation availability, transmission constraints, load conditions, and equipment outages influence system reliability.
