Airport Operations & Ground Handling 101 is a beginner-friendly introduction to the people, processes, equipment, and activities that keep airports and aircraft moving safely and efficiently.
Whether you are preparing for yourfirst aviation job, exploring a career inairport operations or ground handling, or simply want to understand how modern airports work, this course will give you a practical foundation in the essential areas of airport and ground operations.
You will begin by understanding how an airport is organised intolandside, terminal, and airside areas, along with important airport terminology such as aircraft stands, aprons, taxiways, runways, and service roads.
You will then follow the completepassenger journey, from airport entry and check-in through security, immigration, boarding, arrival, baggage reclaim, and customs.
The course also takes you behind the scenes ofairport baggage handling, explaining how checked baggage moves from bag drop through baggage handling systems, sorting, make-up areas, aircraft loading, unloading, and reclaim. You will also be introduced to transfer baggage, oversized baggage, priority baggage, mishandled baggage, and rush baggage.
A major part of the course focuses onramp and ground handling operations. You will learn about common Ground Support Equipment, or GSE, including

✨ Baggage tractors
✨ Ground Power Units
✨ Passenger stairs
✨ Catering vehicles
You will also explore aircraft ground servicing activities such asrefuelling, catering, cabin cleaning, potable water servicing, lavatory servicing, ground power, baggage loading, and passenger boarding.
One of the most important lessons covers theaircraft turnaround - the period between an aircraft arriving at its stand and departing again. You will see how multiple teams work together, often simultaneously, and why communication, timing, coordination, and operational readiness are so important for on-time performance.
Safety is also a major focus.
You will be introduced to essentialairside safety principles, including PPE, vehicle awareness, aircraft engines, jet blast, propellers, restricted areas, andForeign Object Debris - FOD. You will also learn the difference between aviationsafety and security, and why both are fundamental to airport operations.
