Critical thinking skills for work: clarify problems, test assumptions, evaluate evidence and reduce decision bias

What you'll learn
Explain what critical thinking is and how it differs from criticism, cynicism, intelligence and indecision
Understand the CLEAR framework and how to scale it to a decision's impact, uncertainty and reversibility
Prepare a neutral decision question with defined outcomes, criteria, constraints, stakeholders and time horizon
Identify hidden assumptions and record them in an assumption log with risk, evidence and a test
Recognise how framing narrows the options, and reframe from blame to process and certainty to hypothesis
Understand how to test evidence for reliability, relevance, sufficiency, recency and representativeness
Identify the difference between fact, interpretation, opinion, inference and prediction
Recognise hasty generalisation, false dilemmas, appeals to authority, post hoc and circular reasoning
Know which process safeguards reduce confirmation bias, anchoring, sunk cost, overconfidence and groupthink
Build a decision record with visible reasoning, honest uncertainty, clear ownership and review triggers
Requirements
No background in logic, philosophy, statistics or research methods is needed
No software, tools or subscriptions - the course is completely tool-neutral
o management title required; the method works at any level of an organisation
A willingness to question your own reasoning, not only other people's
One real workplace decision to practise on is helpful but optional
Description
Most decisions at work are made with incomplete information and a deadline attached. A complaint arrives, a project slips, a manager proposes a new tool - and the pressure is to act now. But speed without clarity only makes the wrong problem move faster. A confident presentation can hide weak reasoning, and an opinion repeated often enough starts to sound like a fact.
This one-hour course gives you a repeatable method for thinking clearly when information is thin, opinions conflict, time is short, or the familiar answer feels a little too easy. It is built around CLEAR: Clarify the question, Label the assumptions, Examine the evidence and reasoning, Assess alternatives and trade-offs, Reach and review the decision. The same five steps work for a sixty-second choice and for a decision that takes six weeks - you scale the depth to the impact, uncertainty and reversibility of the call.
Everything is taught through one running case. At Clearview Services, response times have slipped and complaints are rising. A senior manager has already decided the answer: buy a new service-management platform. Priya, an operations manager, has to recommend whether to approve it. You watch her turn a proposed solution back into a real question, build an assumption log, triangulate evidence, map the argument, run a premortem, and reach a decision that leadership can understand, execute and revisit.
This course is for employees, team leaders, managers, project professionals, analysts, and anyone who makes or supports workplace decisions. It is tool-neutral and theory-based. You do not need a background in logic, philosophy or statistics. You do not need software, a subscription, or a management title. You need one real decision and a willingness to test your own reasoning.
Throughout the course you will learn
• What critical thinking actually is - and how it differs from criticism, cynicism, intelligence and indecision
• How to turn a vague concern or a preferred solution into a neutral decision question with outcomes, criteria, constraints and a time horizon
• How to separate observations, interpretations, problems, causes and proposed solutions
• How to build an assumption log and prioritise assumptions by importance and uncertainty
• How to reframe an issue - blame to process, activity to outcome, certainty to hypothesis - to widen the options
• How to test evidence for reliability, relevance, sufficiency, recency and representativeness
• How to tell an anecdote from a pattern, and correlation from cause
• How to map an argument and spot hasty generalisation, false dilemmas, appeals to authority, post hoc reasoning and circular reasoning
• How to reduce confirmation bias, anchoring, availability, sunk cost, status quo, overconfidence and groupthink using process safeguards, not willpower
• How to generate real alternatives, compare trade-offs in a decision matrix without false precision, and use a bounded pilot to resolve the uncertainty that matters
• How to record a decision with its evidence, assumptions, owner, next action and review triggers
By the end, you will be able to clarify what is actually being decided, name and test the assumptions underneath it, judge whether the evidence is strong enough, compare genuine alternatives, and communicate a decision with visible reasoning and honest uncertainty. Strong decisions do not require perfect certainty. They require a clear question, visible assumptions, proportionate evidence, tested reasoning, real alternatives and accountable review - and that is a habit you can start using on your very next decision.
