UPS behaviour, ride-through, PERC1/PERC2, EMT validation and practical connection-assessment decisions
What you'll learn
⚡ Trace data center electrical paths and distinguish IT service continuity from grid-import behaviour.
⚡ Explain load cessation, recovery, current limits, oscillations and flexibility using engineering examples.
⚡ Compare composite load, PERC1, PERC2 and EMT models and identify the evidence needed to validate them.
⚡ Structure a connection assessment, commissioning plan and change-control process for a fictional campus.
Requirements
❗ Basic electrical engineering: active/reactive power, three-phase systems and per-unit quantities. No simulation software or programming is required.
Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
Data centers connect computing equipment, power converters, cooling systems and stored energy to the electricity network. Their grid behaviour depends on the active equipment paths and controls, not simply the facility megawatt rating. This course gives power engineers a practical framework for examining that behaviour and the evidence needed for a connection assessment.
Developed by Mohamed Shamseldein, P.Eng., Ph.D., the course follows electricity from the connection point through transformers, UPS systems, server power supplies and cooling. You will distinguish IT-service continuity from continuity of grid demand, then examine current limits, load cessation, reconnection, recharge, frequency response, oscillations and power quality.
The modelling lessons compare composite load representations, PERC1, PERC2 and electromagnetic-transient models. They explain parameter bases, implementation differences, repeated-disturbance checks, benchmarking and validation against physical evidence. You will learn why additional model detail does not automatically establish accuracy and how to ask for data that supports an engineering decision.
Later lessons connect those mechanisms to performance requirements, flexibility, commissioning, event recording and change control. A fictional Cedar Ridge campus brings the calculations and assessment decisions together. All numerical examples are teaching assumptions, not measurements from a customer facility or universal connection limits.
The course includes eighteen main video modules, optional technical-reference lessons, thirty knowledge questions with explanations, captions, transcripts, companion slides and a downloadable interactive browser companion. No simulation software or programming is required. Basic electrical-engineering knowledge, including three-phase power and per-unit quantities, is expected.
This independent, utility-neutral course is intended for utility and system-operator engineers, connection-assessment teams, consultants, developers and equipment engineers. It carries no institutional endorsement and does not confer professional licensure or accredited certification. Apply the current requirements of the responsible authority to any real project.
AI disclosure: AI tools assisted with drafting, diagrams, code, assessments and production. The course uses a synthetic English narrator. The course is developed around the instructor's power-system engineering expertise; learners should use the course Q&A to raise technical questions and report unclear explanations.
Who this course is for
⭐ Utility and system-operator engineers, connection-assessment and planning teams, and data center developers or equipment engineers seeking a grid-integration framework.
