Every crime leaves traces. Today, most of them are digital.
This course is your entry into digital forensics: the craft of recognizing digital traces, acquiring them correctly, and documenting them so they hold up in court. It lays the foundation for every specialization that follows.
What digital traces are. We start with what makes something a trace at all, how physical and digital traces differ, and what makes digital traces special: they are volatile, easily altered, and exist on several layers of abstraction at once. Plus an overview of the specializations: disk, network, multimedia, cloud, malware, mobile and IoT forensics.
How to work cleanly. The most important part of the course. Why objectivity decides the outcome of an investigation, what the experience trap is, and why disproving several hypotheses beats confirming one. Then the three requirements every method must meet: acceptance, credibility and repeatability. We walk through the established process models, from the SAP model and the Kent model to the international standard ISO 27037, and clarify the difference between post-mortem analysis and live forensics.
How data looks inside a computer. Bits and bytes, binary and hexadecimal, ASCII. Building on that, hash functions and their properties, MD5 and SHA compared, and what hash values are actually used for: proving integrity, matching against hash databases, and the role they play in combating child sexual abuse material.
How to handle evidence. Strategic preparation, the forensic workstation, mobile kits and write blockers. Seizure and labeling, an unbroken chain of custody and the duty to document. Then acquisition itself: forensic versus logical imaging and the three criteria for choosing, the four requirements of a forensic duplicate, and the formats RAW, E01 and AFF. Finally triage forensics, for situations where decisions must be made on site within minutes.
No prior knowledge required. Every technical term is introduced before it is used.
