Build a React, Express & PostgreSQL app with Cursor, Docker, AWS and GitHub Actions

Description
This hands-on workshop takes multiple technologies and combines them into one complete full-stack application deployed to AWS - while using an AI coding agent to generate the code.
Unlike my regular Hands-On Introduction courses, this workshop isn't focused on teaching one technology from scratch.
Instead, we'll start with an empty folder and use an AI coding agent inside Cursor to build, containerize, and deploy an entire application consisting of a separate frontend, backend, database, cloud infrastructure, and CI/CD pipeline.
And we won't hand-write the application or infrastructure code ourselves.
The application we'll build is a personal expense tracker.
Users will be able to register an account, log in, add expenses with categories and dates, and view a summary of their spending.
We'll build the application as two separate services
Once the application is working locally, we'll containerize both services with Docker and move into the cloud infrastructure.
Instead of configuring AWS resources manually, we'll direct our AI coding agent to create the infrastructure using AWS CDK and TypeScript.
Throughout the workshop, we'll work with
Our AWS CDK infrastructure will provision the networking and compute resources required to run the application, including a VPC, PostgreSQL database on Amazon RDS, ECS cluster, and separate Fargate services for the frontend and backend.
We'll then push the complete project to GitHub and build a GitHub Actions CI/CD workflow that automatically rebuilds and redeploys our services when we push changes.
Once everything is running, we'll make a real application change and push it through the pipeline to verify that our automated deployment works from end to end.
But getting to a working application isn't the only goal of this workshop.
AI coding agents are non-deterministic. They make decisions we need to review, misunderstand requirements, introduce bugs, and sometimes generate infrastructure that simply doesn't work.
Rather than hiding those moments, we'll work through them.
You'll see how I communicate requirements to the agent, review what it generates, investigate problems, provide additional context, and guide it toward a working solution.
That's where human judgment remains essential.
By the end of the workshop, we'll have gone from an empty folder to a deployed full-stack application consisting of a React frontend, Express backend, PostgreSQL database, containerized services, AWS infrastructure defined as code, and an automated CI/CD pipeline.
Finally, we'll tear down the AWS resources we've created so that they don't continue generating unnecessary costs.
This workshop is a great fit if you are
This is not an introduction to React, Express, PostgreSQL, Docker, AWS CDK, or AWS. Basic familiarity with these technologies is recommended so that you can focus on how the pieces are connected and how the AI agent works across them.
If you've already learned the individual technologies and want to put them together in a real project, this workshop is the next step.
