Classify bulk cargo hazards, verify cargo information, and apply safe loading, moisture, and voyage controls

What you'll learn
Explain how the IMSBC Code, SOLAS context, and key parties support safe solid bulk cargo operations.
Classify solid bulk cargoes into Groups A, B, and C and identify the control pathway for multiple hazards.
Interpret cargo schedules, declarations, certificates, and test results to make a structured cargo acceptance review.
Apply schedule-specific controls for loading, moisture management, carriage monitoring, discharge, and stop-work escalation.
Requirements
No prior experience required.
Basic familiarity with shipboard, terminal, or cargo operations is helpful but not essential.
Access to the current applicable IMSBC Code is recommended for reference during the course.
Description IMSBC Code provides a practical, operations-focused introduction to the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code and its role in safer bulk cargo voyages. Solid bulk cargoes can present liquefaction, chemical, physical, and atmosphere-related hazards. Safe outcomes depend on accurate cargo information, disciplined shipshore coordination, and decisions that follow the applicable cargo schedule rather than assumptions or commercial pressure.
You will learn how the IMSBC Code is structured, how cargo Groups A, B, and C guide hazard controls, and how to interpret individual cargo schedules. The course explains the responsibilities of shippers, terminals, masters, and competent authorities, then connects these responsibilities to cargo declarations, certificates, stowage, segregation, weather protection, ventilation, monitoring, and emergency readiness.
The learning path moves from core terminology and classification to preloading document checks and operational controls throughout loading, carriage, and discharge. You will examine moisture content, flow moisture point, and transportable moisture limit in the context of Group A acceptance decisions, including the limits of visual checks and the need to escalate uncertainty. You will also explore schedule led controls for reactive, self heating, gas producing, and oxygen depleting cargoes. Practical scenarios help you recognize red flags, define stop-work triggers, and maintain clear records and handovers.
- Read cargo schedules and convert requirements into shipboard actions.
- Review cargo declarations, certificates, and test results before loading.
- Identify liquefaction and chemical hazard controls for a planned voyage.
- Coordinate safer loading, carriage, discharge, and escalation decisions.
By the end of the course, you will be able to use the IMSBC Code as a repeatable planning and assurance tool for solid bulk cargo operations, supporting informed communication and safer decisions on board and at the terminal.
Who this course is for
