Distillation columns, air-cooled and shell & tube exchangers, fired heaters, selection and sizing - all in one course
What you'll learn
Convert a process duty into a defensible equipment selection and a first-pass size, across exchangers, separators, columns, vessels and storage
Diagnose underperforming process equipment systematically - separating process causes from mechanical causes with the data available
Read a column's hydraulic operating window, lay out trays, and select packing and liquid distributors on real engineering criteria
Size, rate and troubleshoot air-cooled heat exchangers, including design ambient selection and seasonal derating
Design and assess shell and tube exchangers - TEMA types, tube layout, baffles, fouling allowance and cleaning access
Understand fired heater design and operation, including heat flux limits, draft, burners and tube damage mechanisms
Control design margin across a project and stop conservative assumptions compounding into oversized, unreliable equipment
Build inspection and turnaround scope from performance data, and carry out systematic internal surveys
Apply the relevant API and TEMA Requirements, and identify the datasheet fields that carry the most project risk
Engage vendors, interpret budget pricing, and estimate equipment cost using capacity scaling and installed cost factors
Requirements
No prior equipment design experience is required - every module is built from first principles
Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow the course
Comfortable with basic algebra - every calculation is worked step by step
Helpful but not essential: some familiarity with process flow diagrams or equipment datasheets
No software or purchases needed - this is an applied engineering course
Modules can be taken in any order - start with the equipment in front of you
Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
Take the process equipment off a unit and what is left is pipe, steel and control. The columns, exchangers, heaters and drums are where the process actually happens, and they are where the money is - in capital cost, in energy, and in the throughput lost when one of them is not performing.
This masterclass covers that equipment as one discipline, because that is how it is worked on. The engineer who owns the column also owns the reboiler, the overhead condenser and the air coolers downstream of it, and the questions asked about all of them are the same questions: is it selected correctly, is it sized correctly, and if it is underperforming, why?
WHAT IS INSIDE
Five complete modules, each a full course in its own right
PROCESS EQUIPMENT SELECTION & SIZING - turning a duty into an equipment specification across the whole equipment population, with margin philosophy, datasheets, vendor pricing and cost estimation.
DISTILLATION COLUMNS & VESSEL INTERNALS - separation principles, tray types and hydraulics, random and structured packing, liquid distribution, feed devices, mechanical design, internal inspection and systematic troubleshooting.
AIR-COOLED HEAT EXCHANGERS - configurations, thermal design and ambient sensitivity, headers, tubes and fins, API 661 Requirements, fans, drives and winterisation, fouling, damage mechanisms and bundle replacement.
SHELL & TUBE HEAT EXCHANGERS - thermal and mechanical design, TEMA types, tube layout and baffles, fouling and cleaning, inspection and retubing.
FIRED HEATERS - heater types, heat flux and firing, radiant and convection sections, burners and draft, tube damage mechanisms, and inspection.
WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT
Every module ends where the real work is: diagnosis. Not what the equipment is, but what to do when it is not performing - which data discriminates between causes, what an internal inspection is actually looking for, and when the honest answer is a revamp rather than a repair.
The selection module then ties the set together, because the decision that determines how a piece of equipment behaves for thirty years is made in a fortnight at concept stage, usually by someone who was never taught how to make it.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Process engineers who own equipment performance; equipment and mechanical engineers specifying, rating and revamping; reliability and integrity engineers investigating recurring problems; turnaround engineers building inspection and replacement scope; project and FEED engineers making early equipment decisions; and graduate engineers building a complete picture of process equipment rather than a fragment of it.
WHAT YOU GET
Three full modules across fifteen sections and sixty lessons, approximately twenty hours of structured on-demand video and a final exam, all lecture presentations downloadable, lifetime access on mobile and TV anda certificate of completion.
No prior equipment design experience is required - every module is built from first principles. Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow it.
Enrol now and stop learning this equipment one emergency at a time.
